What Goes In Your Pockets:
- Maxwell’s Quick Medical Reference
- Tarascon Pediatric Outpatient Pocketbook or Tarascon Pediatric Emergency Pocketbook based on the setting of your rotation
- Tarascon Pocket Pediatric Tables
- stethoscope
- alcohol wipes to clean your stethoscope between patients
- tongue depressors
- cheap pens
- stickers for the kids
- +/- otoscope and otoscope tips (if they aren’t on the wall in your clinic)
What to Study:
- Blueprints Pediatrics - This is a good review book to go through once.
- Nelson Essentials of Pediatrics, 6th ed. - Use this "baby Nelson" for reference only. Although it is the condensed version, it is still too thick to finish in a short rotation. It is an excellent text and worth buying if you plan to work with children.
- +/- The Harriet Lane Handbook - This text will help you in patient management during rounds. If you can afford it, go for it. If you can't afford it, it's not essential. The current edition gives you access to a searchable online version of the text, as well.
- Case Files Pediatrics and Pediatrics Pretest – These are useful for the shelf exam.

*We realize that not every school has the same rotation length. We’ve based our study plans off of the most common rotation length. You may need to readjust the number of pages and questions per day for a shorter or longer rotation length. Also, our rotation study plans are based off 7-day study weeks. If you prefer to study for only 5 or 6 days per week, that’s ok, too. Just read a few more pages and do a few more questions than we suggest in this plan on the days you are studying.
**You will find that you will occasionally need to deviate from this plan so that you can “read ahead” about your patients and the cases you will be seeing. This study guide is designed to keep you on track and get you through the material enough times to do well on your shelf exam.
Other Advice:
- As you did for your internal medicine rotation, make some flashcards everyday based on course objectives, readings, lectures, and/or wards learning to study.
- Wash your hands constantly. Lots of germs will come through the door to your clinic or hospital, and you don’t want to take any home with you.
