OB/GYN
What Goes In Your Pockets:
- a copy of the pocket version of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Infertility (aka the “little red book of OB/GYN”)
- your PDA/phone (loaded with a drug reference and a pregnancy wheel)
- a pen
- +/- Pocket Dilation Guide
What to Study:
- Blueprints Obstetrics and Gynecology and/or Obstetrics and Gynecology by Beckman–Finish at least one of them. Students tell us that Blueprints has everything you need to know to pass the shelf, while Beckmann is a little more in depth and recommended by ACOG for studying OB/GYN.
- Case Files: Obstetrics and Gynecology and/or Obstetrics and Gynecology Pretest – These are also useful to help study for the shelf exam

*We realize that not every school has the same rotation length. We’ve based our study plans off of the most common rotation length. You may need to readjust the number of pages and questions per day for a shorter or longer rotation length. Also, our rotation study plans are based off 7-day study weeks. If you prefer to study for only 5 or 6 days per week, that’s ok, too. Just read a few more pages and do a few more questions than we suggest in this plan on the days you are studying.
**You will find that you will occasionally need to deviate from this plan so that you can “read ahead” about your patients and the cases you will be seeing. This study guide is designed to keep you on track and get you through the material enough times to do well on your shelf exam.
Other Advice:
- Be sure to ask where you should stand during deliveries. There is a lot going on and you don’t want to get in the way. Watch your resident’s/attending’s technique and learn from them so that you can be prepared to deliver if given the opportunity.
- Build good rapport with the L&D nurses, as they can teach you a lot and help you see interesting cases.
- Act interested and, if things are going smoothly, ask questions. You’ll get to be more actively involved if you do this.
- The learning environment is different at every hospital. Some allow students to be more involved than others. Be sensitive to that and don’t let it hurt your feelings if your residents/attending/hospital doesn’t allow you to do as much as you’d like. Part of this rotation is figuring out where your place is in this hospital’s culture so you can do the most learning and get the most experience possible.
